FAQs

What is the difference between family history and genealogy?

Genealogy is the skeleton where one’s ancestors are traced through birth, marriage and death records. Family history adds soul and flesh to the skeleton, it includes all additional records such as school, military, land records and photos to create a narrative and fill in silent gaps of genealogy framework.

How much information about my family do I need to provide?

For me to start researching you need to provide as much data as possible especially surnames, years and locations.
Archival law and General Protection Data regulation in Lithuania limits what information I can access in archives and elsewhere. Private researchers can freely research baptism older than 100 years, deaths older than 30 years after person’s death.
.

What sources are used for research?

Majority of historical information is held in Lithuanian archives, universities, libraries and museums. Sometimes genealogical research includes Polish and Latvian archives. In order to make a narrative church records, parishioners lists, nobility records, various inventories, passports, military, land records, teachers and students files, forced labor in Germany during WWII documents, 1942 census, Soviet exile and Soviet partisans files, newspapers, maps, cemeteries.

What do 10 hours of research get me?

You can expect one surname of your ancestry research in one place.
20 hours research would cover few surnames, few parishes, passport records.
40 and onwards hours would make you a family forest in multiple places, genealogical and DNA cousins, school, military, passport, census records.
With larger research, naturally the touring gets longer, there is a bigger chance to find living relatives.

How long does research take?

The research takes at least 3 months. Ideally start preparing with a research one year before your planned trip to Lithuania.

Do you work with all religious confessions?

Since this is family history project with travelling connotations, I specialize in Catholic family history.
